The headlines were dated but there is no better place to get a hefty weekly dose of news about art and culture. However,\u00a0the cover of <em>The New York Times Magazine<\/em> stopped me cold. There in neo-classical, alabaster,\u00a0pearlescent glory is the image of Lena Dunham, representing &#8220;The Culture Issue.&#8221;\u00a0Help me please!\u00a0This\u00a0inane myopic attempt\u00a0succeeded only in portraying\u00a0culture as so much\u00a0white bread &#8211;\u00a0bland and unappealing. That cover image\u00a0also begs the question &#8211; can you really equate\u00a0Dunham with\u00a0culture? She seems\u00a0more of pop tart to\u00a0me. When I saw that cover I wanted\u00a0to scream to someone at the Times,\u00a0&#8220;Seriously?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How does anyone who actually understands the breath and depth of culture think that\u00a0an image that is the\u00a0visual\u00a0antithesis of the cultural vibrancy\u00a0today, would possibly resonate.\u00a0I thought we&#8217;d gotten past the white bread focus on culture. Today we&#8217;re consuming the rustic, unbleached flour,\u00a0brown, black, spicy,\u00a0seeded, hearty,\u00a0unsliced,\u00a0tasty, tear-off-a-hunk-with-your-hands stuff &#8211; the cultural equivalent of an organic bread basket.<\/p>\n<p>Inside &#8220;The Culture Issue&#8221;\u00a0was better &#8211;\u00a0more colorful,\u00a0relevant and diverse &#8211;\u00a0as culture should be.\u00a0Dunham&#8217;s cover challenged the content instead of complementing it\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0like using Wonderbread to\u00a0illustrate artisanal baking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Busy weekend, I didn&#8217;t get to read Sunday&#8217;s\u00a0New York Times until today.
