\"Circe<\/a>In my novel in progress, Provenance<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0 visual art and\u00a0artists in Paris between\u00a0the World Wars are\u00a0key characters.\u00a0Then, as now, in the shadow of conflict and tragedy, art in Paris thrived. Case in point:\u00a0Monique Wells,\u00a0who blogs from Paris on Entr\u00e9e to Black Paris<\/a>\u00a0shared her recent envy-worthy experience at the opening of\u00a0a fascinating exhibition,\u00a0Romare\u00a0Bearden’s Paris Odyssey<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0This rich exhibition, at\u00a0the Columbia Global Center in Paris,<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>features Bearden\u2019s work based on\u00a0The<\/i>\u00a0Odyssey<\/i>\u00a0 as well as several Bearden paintings based on jazz in the City of Lights.\u00a0Paris Odyssey<\/i>\u00a0 also highlight works by Henri Matisse, including Matisse\u2019s landmark book,\u00a0Jazz<\/em> (1947). The artist is thought to be\u00a0a central influence on Bearden\u2019s art.<\/p>\n

This may not be the ideal time to travel to\u00a0Paris but to experience this exhibition,\u00a0you\u00a0will certainly wish you were there.<\/p>\n

From the press release: Romare Bearden’s Paris Odyssey is organized by the Smithsonian Institution\u00a0<\/span>Traveling Exhibition Service\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/a>in cooperation with the Romare Bearden Foundation<\/span><\/span><\/a> and Estate and the DC Moore Gallery<\/span><\/span><\/a>. The show was conceived and curated by Robert O\u2019Meally, Columbia\u2019s Zora Neale Hurston Professor of English, and is sponsored by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Bearden (1911\u20131988) was long a Harlem fixture, working for several years in a studio above the famed Apollo Theater<\/span><\/span><\/a>, just a few blocks northeast of (the Columbia\u00a0 University) campus.<\/p>\n
