Artist Kehinde Wiley will be awarded the U.S. Department of State Medal of Arts by Secretary of State John Kerry in a ceremony on January 21 for \u201csubstantive commitment to the U.S. State Department\u2019s cultural diplomacy outreach through the visual arts.\u201d The award was first given during the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of <a href=\"http:\/\/art.state.gov\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Art in Embassies<\/span><\/a> program in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The honor was reported by\u00a0the art press, with one interesting take&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/john-kerry-will-present-the-state-department-medal-of-arts-to-kehinde-wiley-220370\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Artnet News<\/span><\/a> noted that Wiley is \u201cKnown primarily for his large-scale painting of young African Americans, depicted in the style of European royal portraits\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artfixdaily.com\/news_feed\/2015\/01\/14\/3371-kehinde-wiley-to-receive-us-state-dept-medal-of-arts\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Artfix Daily<\/span><\/a> said, \u201cSecretary of State John Kerry will present the medal to Yale-educated Wiley who is known for his portraits of people with brown or black skin in heroic poses, representing saints, and oftentimes set against vibrant backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnews.com\/2015\/01\/13\/kehinde-wiley-to-receive-the-u-s-department-of-state-medal-of-arts\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">ArtNews<\/span><\/a> reported Wiley honor by saying the artist is, \u201cKnown for his flashy painting that depict black men and women in the style of Old Master portraiture\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flashy?
