What is inspired and what is simply insipid?<\/p>\n<p>Wagner&#8217;s script\u00a0and Tomlin&#8217;s performance nail that question with Trudy, a homeless bag lady, as she ponders art is our society by holding up two found objects &#8211; a can of Campbell&#8217;s soup\u00a0and an Andy Warhol Campbell Soup print. &#8220;Soup or art, art or soup?&#8221; she\u00a0asks\u00a0looking back and forth between the two.<\/p>\n<p>I had the same dilemma\u00a0when I saw a recent story today on <a title=\"Tilda Swinton surprises MoMA visitors with sleeping installation\" href=\"http:\/\/soa.li\/cMVeeQg\" target=\"_blank\">Tida Swinton&#8217;s performance piece at MoMA<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; she is sleeping in a glass box in a gallery, is that\u00a0art or is it soup?\u00a0Soup or art?\u00a0Like Trudy I&#8217;m gonna have to ponder\u00a0this\u00a0but I&#8217;m thinking Swinton&#8217;s\u00a0performance would go well with crackers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Jane Wagner&#8216;s\u00a01985 masterpiece,\u00a0&#8220;Search for\u00a0Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,&#8221; Lily Tomlin embodies characters with still relevant\u00a0questions about\u00a0how our society got where it is and where the hell we are headed.
